So I have this friend who thinks the DAP are racist. And he say's he is going to vote for UMNO next year when he is old enough to vote. But I just don't get it.
I am not a DAP member, nor a PR supporter, not even a BN supporter. I am an observer, like many other 20 year olds, who are still waiting to turn 21 and be able to vote, and I still haven't made up my mind. But one thing is for sure, I disagree with my friend that the DAP is a racist party.
The DAP, or the Democratic Action Party, opens its arms to people of all walks of life. It doesn't matter if you are Black or White, or of any skin colour, or of any ethnic background, you can join and support the DAP.
You see, this is perhaps the main point which makes me nuts. My friend says the DAP is racist, but he supports UMNO whole heartedly, on the basis that the former is racist.
The UMNO only accept Bumiputrans as members. You are Indian? No UMNO for you. You are Chinese? No UMNO for you. You a Maliali? No UMNO for you. You see, the UMNO is a 'race-based' party. Only Malays have been the leaders of the party, and I doubt that will change any time soon.
But the DAP? The Chairman is a Sikh, and the majority of the high-committee are Chinese, but it is still a party based on people who share the same idea, not based on 'ethnic backgrounds'.
Why are the DAP racists? My friend did not say why, or write in his blog why, but he was so confident. This is what happens when we read blogs, and take them for news. This is what happens when we only read the Utusan if we do read the newspapers. This is what happens, blindly calling a group of people racist - just because you feel like it.
People should be forming political parties because they share an idea, not because they are of the same skin colour, or because they have been on a piece of land longer. But what do I know? Maju Pemuda-Pemudi, Harapan Negara.
