DAP MP Tony Pua says vernacular schools are not to blame for the disintegration of the 'rakyat' and instead points the finger to the quality of national schools, or Sekolah Kebangsaan, and the set-up of Mara boarding schools.
I will have to agree and disagree with Tony, because I do believe that vernacular schools are partially at fault for the disunity of Malaysians. There's a school behind my house, and it's not a national school, in fact it's a Chung Hwa school, one of those high-class Chinese primary schools.
During Assembly, the songs they play are in Chinese. The headmaster/ mistress and teachers give their speeches in chinese, and the songs (besides the national anthem) which they play are chinese. If you walked in blindfolded, and looked around on a typical day, you'd think it was some part in the Yunnan province in China, but no, it is actually a school in 'United', Malaysia.
The same goes for boarding schools. You walk in blindfolded into my previous school, or any Mara boarding school, and you'd think 'Malaysia is only filled with Malays. I wonder why they call it Malaysia and not stick with Tanah Melayu or just call it Malayland'.
Aren't the two the same? A vernacular school, and an All-Bumiputra school. How are the two different, Tony Pua? They're not. It may hurt to accept the fact, but ultimately they're the same (more or less give or take).
We're being split up. If you were a Malay, then go to an 'All Malay School' like those Mara boarding schools, then proceed to UiTM (where only Bumiputras are allowed to enroll), would you still be Malaysian?
According to the Kamus Dewan, we are all 'Bangsa Malaysia', not Bangsa Iban, not Bangsa Murut, not Bangsa India etc. So is Malaysia really a country that is 'Berbilang Bangsa'? (Yes, if you count the Filipino Maids and Indon workers, Nepali pakguards), No, it isn't. We are all Bangsa Malaysia. And if we don't start accepting that now, then ntah ah maleh ah
